Electricity Generation from Renewable Energy in Germany 1990-2021 (German Chart)
Germany Installed 780 MW of New Solar in January 2023

Federal Network Agency: 7.2 gigawatts of photovoltaic expansion in 2022

Press Review

According to the Federal Grid Agency, the net addition of photovoltaic capacity in the previous year was 7.2 GW. Wind energy achieved a net addition of 2.4 GW. Of this, 2.1 GW was accounted for by onshore wind turbines and 0.3 GW by offshore wind energy.

The Federal Network Agency has published the expansion figures for renewable energies in 2022. The figures are the net additions to electricity generation from renewable energies. That is, they are the commissioning minus the decommissioning, which the authority has recorded in the market master data register. According to this, the addition of photovoltaics in 2022 amounted to just under 7.2 GW. Onshore wind energy accounted for around 2.1 GW and offshore wind energy for around 0.3 GW in 2022. With 55 MW, biomass plays a subordinate role.

The decommissioning of biomass amounted to about 20 MW. Many onshore wind turbines were also decommissioned in the previous year. Their output totalled 266 MW. Wind turbines at sea were not affected by decommissioning.  In the case of new photovoltaic construction, the decommissioning of 12 MW in 2022 was not of major significance

In addition, the Federal Network Agency also recorded the licences of plants that had not yet gone into operation in 2022. For onshore wind energy, these add up to 4.6 GW, plus 0.5 GW of capacity offshore. In the case of photovoltaics, only plants with a total capacity of 29 MW have not yet been implemented.

Bavaria is in the lead in a comparison of the federal states

In a comparison of the federal states, Bavaria leads with 2.1 GW of new capacity. These are almost exclusively photovoltaic plants. It is followed by NRW with 1.3 GW, Brandenburg with 1.2 GW, Lower Saxony with 1 GW, Baden-Württemberg with 0.8 GW, and Schleswig-Holstein with 0.7 GW. As in Bavaria, the additions in Baden-Württemberg are almost exclusively PV additions. Schleswig-Holstein is the only federal state to have added more wind energy than photovoltaics. All other federal states fall behind in this statistic. The expansion of renewable energies is particularly low in the city-states of Berlin, Hamburg, and Bremen.
